Health benefits of the Mushroom

A lot of people think mushrooms are added to food just for the texture and minimal taste, but when they find out the actual health benefits from most mushrooms they are blown away!

Did you know?

  • Mushrooms are a great source of potassium – Just like potatoes and bananas, mushrooms have a high amount of potassium which your body uses for lowering elevated blood pressure (which could save you from a stroke), but also helping your muscles recover after a strenuous workout (especially if your doing muscle building workouts such as dead-lifts, squats, chin-ups or high intense cardio).
  • Mushrooms have antioxidants that can help lower the risk of certain types of cancer. The antioxidant is called “selenium” and works with the vitamin E in your body to make cells stronger and less vulnerable to attack from cancerous cells. Primarily effective for males who might be prone to getting prostate cancer, In some studies “Selenium” has been able to reduce the risk of prostate cancer by up to 60%.
  • Great source of fiber – Mushrooms are made up mostly of water, however a solid chunk of their mass is made of up fiber, which can help keep you regular and support a healthy digestive track.

The most common type of mushroom are the white button mushroom – which is great for eating on a veggie plate or in a salad and the portobello mushroom, which are great when sautéed and used as a side dish for meals.

Getting mushrooms into your daily diet isn’t essential by any standards, but if your looking for a great way to add density to meals and not bulk up in calories or if you need a meal that is high in potassium then adding these guys to your plate is a great way to start. So next time when someone says “mushrroms? they provide nothing for nobody” you can step up and tell them how it really is! Take that Uncle Pete.

Until next time,

Taylor John.
